Testing of 3 D laser documentation: The Temple of Ramesseum
The output prepared jointly by the University of Berkeley, EAIS Team and the French mission of the Ramesseum is a model demonstration of advanced Laser Scanning Photographic technology. A complete digital numeric model of the Ramesseum temple has been produced, consisting of 99.000.000 (ninety nine million) numeric laser points.
The objective was to display the capacity of this advanced technology in detailed site documentation, and to assess the feasibility of such tools in performing needed monument documentation for a large number of unregistered and threatened sites.
The demonstration model, which consists of a complete coverage of the temple, its architectural details and surrounding buffer zone, was presented to SCA officials, explaining its use and potentiality as well as the complexity to handle its application and data storage. An SCA committee was created to look into the possibility of using such a device in site documentation, management and protection and into ways to handle the propagation of its use.
In addition to the Ramesseum, SCA has asked the team to perform additional detailed survey of the tomb of Montuemhat (TT 34, 26th dynasty) which is in a very poor state of preservation. The visual documentation product has been used as a demonstration to help the setting of a long term project to restore it.
