Madinat Madi al-Gharbiyyah

REGISTERED: Yes

OTHER NAMES: Dja; Narmouthis

This site was founded by Amenemhat III and occupied from the Middle Kingdom to at least the Byzantine period. It contained a Middle Kingdom limestone temple of Renenutet, which was considerably expanded in the Ptolemaic period. An avenue of sphinxes and lions led southwards from the temple. Another temple has recently been discovered east of the gateway to the Ptolemaic temple, dedicated to the cult of two crocodile gods. A large necropolis, a Coptic settlement and numerous churches have also been excavated in the area.

The site is one of the more well preserved in the entire Fayyum governorate and is being extensively excavated by an Italian mission under the leadership of Dr. Edda Bresciani.
