FAQ

EAIS collaborates with several important national institutions and acts as a link between partners concerned with mapping and site management, participating in an exchange of technical assistance, data and research interests.

Our primary national stakeholder is the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) and its associated departments such as Amlaak, the Foreign Missions Department and the local inspectorate offices (Taftish), who are responsible for monitoring sites and conducting fieldwork

Amlaak

Amlaak is the Survey and Property department of SCA. It is responsible for locating archaeological sites through the work of local inspectors. In addition to that, the department prepares and pursues the legal requests until the area is declared to be under the authority of SCA (Property/Under Supervision). The Amlaak Department prepares a map that indicates the site's boundaries to be presented along with the rest of the documents in the legal request.

EAIS uses these maps to identify a site's legal boundaries. These boundaries are vectorized and overlaid on updated background layers (maps and satellite images) in order to check the current situation of the surrounding features. Site visits are done to verify these boundaries by taking GPS points of the actual borders. The final verified version is accessible afterwards to be used by SCA and other stakeholders.

Egyptian Survey Authority (ESA)

The main duties of ESA include creating both cadastral and topographical maps.

A protocol has been signed between SCA (EAIS) and ESA with the purpose of cooperation, and exchanging expertise and data to develop a GIS for Egyptian historical and archaeological sites.

The General Organization for Physical Planning (GOPP)

GOPP is an independent public entity under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities. The organization is responsible for setting the general directives for physical planning policy and preparing plans and programs for urban development in Egypt. GOPP is also mandated with the responsibility of verifying the implementation of plans for urban development.

A collaboration protocol has been signed between EAIS and GOPP to exchange expertise and data. EAIS is concerned with providing the GOPP with the accurate location of archaeological sites during the preparation of master plans, either for existing or new urban areas.
