Tall al-Faramah

REGISTERED: Under Registration Request.

OTHER NAMES: Tall al-Farma; Al-Farama; Perma; Al-Farama; Pelusium (Classical)

Tall al-Farama served as the major border point during the larger part of the first millennium BCE and its importance continued well into the Byzantine period. The archaeological remains are spread over a large area and include a fort, a temple, a large port area, an amphitheatre, and various settlement remains. The site was conquered several times, including by the armies of Kambyses and Alexander the Great. It is currently being excavated by a joint Egyptian-Polish
mission.

Threats to the site include the high water table, climatic factors and the nearby presence of as-Salam Canal. Until the site is officially registered, no adequate site protection measures can be initiated.
