This site lies strategically between the merging point between the two canals in the Wadi Tumaylat and is one of the oldest in the region, possibly to be identified with the 'Walls of the Nomarch" in the story of Sinuhe. Secure archaeological remains date to the New Kingdom, with extensive rebuilding during the 26th dynasty. Early excavators include both Naville and Petrie, and it was also surveyed by the Wadi Tumaylat Project in the late 1970's-early 1980's.
The site exemplifies many of the typical threats in the Delta: urban encroachment, intrusions such as water pipes and roads, and agricultural fields and drainage canals around it
